IMPORTANT NOTICE to Physician Assistants (P.A.’s) and to Medical Doctors (M.D.’s) who supervise P.A.’s in Maine.

The Board Of Licensure In Medicine’s Chapter 2 Rule governing the medical practice of Physician Assistants in Maine has been revised and finalized and is attached for your review and files.

Following are some of the more important changes to Chapter 2:

At least two documented meetings a year must occur between each Physician Assistant and each of his or her Primary Supervising Physicians. Evidence of all four meetings during the P.A.’s two-year licensing cycle shall be included on a document attached to the Plan Of Supervision. See §7, C, 4 on page 10 of the Rule.
Beginning with licenses expiring after April 1, 2013, Physician Assistants will renew their licenses, registrations and authorities every two years by the end of their birth month. Those born in odd-numbered years will renew in odd-numbered years, and likewise those born in even-numbered years. See §4 on page 5 of the Rule. Fees and CME will be pro-rated to accommodate the first transition cycle. Some P.A.’s who renewed this year may find, because of a birthdate after March 31 this year and having been born in an odd-numbered year, that they must renew their P.A. license again this year. We acknowledge this and are readily available to make this transition as smooth as possible and request that such affected licensees please work with Board staff to assure ease of transition. Starting in April, we will issue new P.A. licenses, registrations and Schedule II authorities with revised expiration dates based on birth month and year.
The Plan Of Supervision no longer needs to be submitted to the Board, but it must be kept current and on file at the Maine administrative office of the P.A.’s practice and must be made immediately available to the Board if requested. The Board may require that the Plan be amended to ensure public safety.
P.A.’s who own or have significant financial control of the practice for which they are employed must immediately report as such to the Board. See §7, B, 3 on page 10 of the Rule.

  • RENEWAL FEES INCREASE AS EXPENSES CONTINUE TO OUTSTRIP REVENUES

  • The renewal fee for a physician medical license must increase to $500 every two years, effective for those whose licenses expire in April 2012 and thereafter. This was a difficult decision for the board to make. Even though the renewal fee has remained at $400 for over a decade, necessary operating costs have steadily increased over time.
